Gene Zafft practices in the areas of taxation, estate planning and financial and real estate transactions. Gene attended Washington University School of Business majoring in corporate finance and Washington University School of Law from which he received his JD in 1952. Following his military service as a Captain with the U.S. Army in Korea, Mr. Zafft attended New York University as a research fellow and received a Master of Laws degree in Taxation in 1955.
Gene has been in private practice in St. Louis since 1955, and has had extensive experience in all aspects of Estate Planning; sales, acquisitions and mergers of privately-held businesses; and real estate transactions. He was on the faculty of Washington University Law School as an Adjunct Professor of Estate Planning in the Graduate Tax Program for more than 40 years. He has also taught courses in taxation and legal accounting at Washington University's Law School and Business School. He has lectured at the Miami Estate Planning Institute as well as in taxation programs for the Missouri Bar, the Michigan Bar, the Iowa Bar, the St. Louis Bar, Missouri Society of CPAs and the St. Louis Estate Planning Institute, as well as other professional organizations. His published writings on tax, real estate, business and estate planning subjects have appeared in the Tax Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, and publications of the Miami University Estate Planning Institute and the Institute for Business Planning. One of his special talents is the ability to find practical solutions to technical tax, business and estate planning problems. His book, “20 Questions to Ask About Wills and Estates” was nationally published in February, 2006.
Gene has been active in the Bar Association having served the Missouri Bar as Vice-Chairman of the Taxation Committee. He was, also, Chairman of the St. Louis County Board of Equalization for several years, and Commissioner and Chairman of the Missouri Housing Development Commission. He is presently a neutral panelist for the American Arbitration Association.
In 2001, Gene received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Washington University School of Law.
He is a past master of his Masonic Lodge and has been active in civic and charitable organizations. He serves on the Advisory Board of The Miriam School, which is dedicated to teaching children with learning disabilities.
